Along route 340 in Bird-in-Hand, you'll find a local gem: Kauffman Orchards. This place has been around for more than 100 years and is truly valued among locals. The farm has 12,000 producing trees, including 38 varieties of peaches, and they welcome 35,000 visitors each year. The market at Kauffman Orchards overflows with sweet treats and fresh fruits, and these days, all things apples.

Sweet and seasonal

At their primary location, one of the more popular items you'll find during the harvest is their apple cider. Kauffman Orchards homemade sweet apple cider is loved by locals. The flavor is a blend of just the right amount of sweet and tart apples. The only ingredient in this apple cider is fresh apples, and you don't need more than that.

The natural apple butter is a favorite. Even though the name of it includes butter, it's not actually butter and the spread doesn’t have dairy in it. It is simply a fruit delicacy with a spreadable consistency like soft butter. It works on everything from ice cream to bagels. They use an old-fashioned process of cooking the fruit in fruit juices, retaining the natural sugars and fiber of the fruit.

If you enjoy a freshly made donut, the cider donuts at the Kauffman Orchards market have a unique and what feels like a seasonal taste. They're cooked the old-fashioned way, to retain the natural sugars and tastiness of the fruit.

Success story

Kauffman Orchards all started with the married couple A.L. and Sue Kauffman. In 1904 the two of them purchased a farm and began working on it by farming the land. In 1915, the very first fruits were harvested from Kauffman's apple trees and they began to sell the fruit. And it hasn't stopped since.

Over time, the business expanded and today, it includes a large wholesale operation. Many of the Kauffman Orchard products are available for wholesale, including their fresh fruit, apple cider, fruit butter, as well as other Pennsylvania Dutch Country favorites. One of the seasonal Amish-style favorites is the old-fashioned hard Christmas candy festive mixes.

Last year, the Kauffman's also acquired a stand in the popular Lancaster downtown Central Market. At their secondary market location, they set up every week with a selection of the goodies you usually find at their Bird-in-Hand Market.

Kauffman Orchard is worth a visit any day to get a taste of the fresh and seasonal goodies from Lancaster County.
