For some, it is only an urban legend, a story you tell around Halloween to spook those around you, is it only a tall tale, or is the cemetery haunted? The 100 Steps Cemetery, also known as Carpenter Cemetery, has been named the most haunted cemetery in Indiana. Why?
The cemetery is located in Brazil, Indiana, and according to the legend, the story goes as follows. If you can count 100 steps while walking to the top of a staircase at the cemetery at exactly midnight, the former caretaker (who is deceased) will appear. The caretaker will then share a vision of your time and manner of death.
However, if this frightens you, the only way to get out of the situation is to go back the same way you entered; yes, you need to take precisely 100 steps back to get out alive. The legend does have a few varieties.
One states that if you try to trick the caretaker, you will be thrown on the ground and bear the devil's mark or a handprint. It will last for days. This part of the legend began in the late 1800s when grave robbers became popular.
And yet, it states that there is still one more version of the legend. The legend states that on a very dark night, you can walk up the broken steps until you count to 100; when you walk down, you only count to 99, which is odd because there are reportedly only 60 steps.
However, this night was unique as it was so dark you could not see even your hand in front of you. The original steps are no longer there and have been replaced, so does this affect the legend?
Who knows, since visiting the cemetery is prohibited after dark?
