Ali Tate Cutler of Texas has taken to TikTok to share her grandmother's story and why she has chosen euthanasia. Her grandmother, also referred to as Bubbie lives in Canada and was diagnosed with terminal cancer has decided to forgo medical treatment and has requested euthanasia and assisted suicide.
Assisted suicides have been legal in Canada since 2016 for those who are eligible and over 18. To qualify for assisted suicide, you must be over 18 and mentally competent, have an irremediable medical condition, make a voluntary request not influenced by outsiders, and give informed consent.
In the video, Cutler states that "Bubbie has entered her final chapter in life,"
"After her terminal cancer diagnosis, she is choosing to be euthanized in Canada."
The videos of Cutler and her Bubbie have gone viral, including one where she takes her grandmother out for her last dinner and wants to make the last week of her life memorable.
Bubbie has always supported euthanasia, and when she received her terminal diagnosis, she knew exactly what she would do. She does not want to suffer in any way during chemotherapy, especially when she would only have six months to live with her diagnosis.
Bubbie is 85 years old, and her family is supportive of her decision; Bubbie stated:
"You know, we come into the world alone, we leave it alone. It's a personal decision."
Cutler has been emotional but stays positive as she knows it is Bubbies final wish.
Bubbie even does a Q and A on Cutlers TikTok to help people understand euthanasia and why she chose this option vs. the chemo route that most people choose.
Some of Cutler's followers have criticized her for documenting her grandmothers story, however, I think that death is part of life, but so many of us are afraid of it. Therefore, seeing someone embracing the next step is beautiful, as death is inevitable.
We all die, but do we all live?
