Track buses, trains in real-time with Valley Metro newest app

PHOENIX, AZ — Valley Metro has released the Valley Metro: Plan & Track app, which includes real-time bus and light rail monitoring and travel planning, in collaboration with the City of Phoenix and Vix Technology.

"More than 90 percent of our riders own a smartphone and with this major upgrade in technology, our vital transit system becomes more accessible and easier to use. This new tool is particularly critical as our riders and our communities return stronger than ever from the COVID-19 pandemic," said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and Vice-Chair of the Valley Metro RPTA Board of Directors.

After a 2020 rider poll revealed that almost 70 percent of respondents believe it is critical to keep riders aware of service modifications, the app's planning and monitoring capabilities were enhanced. Riders will be able to know when their bus or train will arrive thanks to real-time tracking. They may now do the following using the app:

  • Use step-by-step guidance to plan journeys.
  • Track trains and buses in real-time.
  • View the travel time for a trip.
  • Save favorite stops.
  • Receive service notifications and updates.

In 2022, the app will provide mobile fare payment in addition to real-time tracking. Riders will be able to establish an account and pay for transport tickets using their phones.

The City of Phoenix has brought in Vix Technology to update Valley Metro's regional fare system on behalf of the region, providing riders more tools and freedom to use the system. This software is the first step in a multi-year plan that includes mobile ticketing, reloadable smart cards and new, more contemporary fare collecting equipment.

The app is available for free on both iOS and Google Play.
