Four Philly Starbucks attempt to unionize
- Four Starbucks in Philadelphia voted to unionize on Wednesday, joining a nationwide push from dozen of other stores. The stores at 9th and South Streets, 20th and Market Streets, 34th and Walnut Streets, and Penn Medicine Perelman Center all voted to unionize while the shop at 1945 Callowhill Street rejected unionization. Starbucks has said that they will respect their employees' voices and will bargain in good faith but has also planned to spend $1 billion on improving wages and conditions and non-union stores.
Jersey Shore using holiday weekend as test as vacationers face rising gas prices
- One of Philadelphia's favorite vacation spots, the Jersey Shore, is anxiously awaiting the Memorial Day crowd to gauge what impact rising gas prices and inflation will have on the area's summertime industry. Things appear to be positive as the Jersey Shore is expecting a 90-95% occupancy for this weekend.
Oz, McCormick recount has until June 8
- The recount in the Senatorial race between Mehmet Oz and David McCormick has a deadline of June 8, when counties have to submit their counts to the Pa. Department of State. Oz holds a mere 902 vote lead over McCormick, which lead to Oz putting out a video last Friday declaring himself the presumptive nominee. McCormick is attempting to fight in court to allow mail-in ballots that were not properly dated to be counted.
Gov. forecasters warn of another above-average hurricane season
- Philadelphians have been urged to begin preparing now as government forecasters predict that multiple hurricanes will hit the Atlantic coast this season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict 14-21 named storms coming between June 1 and November 30, with six to ten of them being hurricanes. Last year saw Philadelphia suffer through massive flooding, in one memorable instance completely submerging the Vine Street Expressway.
