Chester Co. judge removes five school board members over masks

  • A judge from the Chester County Court of Common Pleas ordered that all five Democrats on the county school board be removed due to a petition from a parent based on their continued implementation of mask mandates. However, the school board insisted it was a "procedural result" and that special counsel would be brought in to represent the five potentially ousted members.

Mayor Kenney lays out new budget

  • Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney will unveil his new budget on Thursday along with a plan for the city's next five years. The $5.51 billion budget will provide an influx of funding for schools, libraries and crime prevention. Kenney earmarked $184 million of the budget for crime prevention as the city continues to struggle with gun crimes and homicide, an 18.5% increase from last year's budget.

Councilmember seeks to address police staffing shortages

  • Philadelphia Councilmember Derek Green is attempting to push legislation that would help the city's police department combat staffing shortages. The piece of legislation would offer bonuses that total $10,000 in order to attract new recruits and would relax the current residency requirement. The bonuses would kick in whenever there are at least 5% fewer officers than however many are included in the city’s budget.

New law expands city's effort to prevent 'blockbusting'

  • This week Philadelphia announced they would be expanding the Fair Practices Ordinance, a civil rights law put in place to combat "blockbusting." Blockbusting was the act of playing on racial fears to convince white people to sell houses cheap as the neighborhoods demographics changed and then gouging the price to Black families looking to buy a home. Now, the law is seeking to address "We Buy Home" scams popping up across the city.
