Police report small dip in homicides, shootings

  • Since the start of the new year Philadelphia has continued to see a rise in homicides, however in February shootings and murders actually decreased. From Jan. 31 to Feb. 27, Philadelphia Police Department officials reported that homicides decreased by 7% and shootings have dropped by 5%. Police also report that in their pinpoint areas the gains against homicides and shootings are even greater during that same time period.

Minor traffic stop ban goes into effect

  • A new law went into effect on Thursday, banning Philadelphia police from stopping motorists from being pulled over for minor traffic violations like a broken brake light or driving with an unfastened registration plate. The law is meant to help to end discrimination as Black drivers are pulled over at a disproportional rate to their white counterparts.

Prosecution rests in Amtrak trial

  • Brandon Bostian, the Amtrak engineer on duty, is on trial for his role in the 2015 train crash that killed eight people and injured almost 200 others. Bostian is charged with causing a catastrophe, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless endangerment. On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office rested its case against him.

Montgomery Co. couple traveling to Ukraine to defend their home country

  • An anonymous couple from Montgomery County is traveling back to their homeland of Ukraine to help fight off the ongoing Russian invasion. The two have left their jobs, amassed supplies and are flying to Poland before traveling to Lviv in Ukraine to help assist the defensive effort in any way they can. "It's our land and our country and we have to protect it," the couple said.
