Vanquish the vermin

  • Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed a bill on Thursday aiming to curb rat infestations as development continues to boom in the city. The bill requires property owners to execute a rat abatement plan before demolishing or renovating a building. Reports have been coming in about rats appearing when new developments are taking place, putting nearby homeowners at risk.

Icy conditions wreak havoc on Philadelphia

  • Portions of Philadelphia were struck overnight by icy conditions as a result of a storm system passing through the northeast. According to PECO, 6,100 residents lost power due to the ice storm. Drivers are urged to be careful as the storm may have also downed trees and powerlines. The weather is expected to leave the area around midday.

Wolf argues to keep mail-in voting for primary

  • Gov. Tom Wolf and his administration argued in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Thursday to keep mail-in voting for the upcoming spring primary. Wolf's lawyers argued that changing the law now, a law that was enacted two years ago by a Republican-controlled legislature, would only "exacerbate voter confusion and the danger of disenfranchisement.”

Officials monitor contagious subvariant

  • As COVID-19 cases decline across the country and President Joe Biden relaxes federal mask mandates, health officials are closely monitoring an extremely contagious subvariant of omicron. BA.2, also referred two as stealth omicron, is 30% more contagious and has been detected in 47 US states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. However, there is currently no evidence of BA.2 surging across the nation.
