An Asian American museum in Seattle was targeted.
The Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, Washington, is located in the International District. The museum contains historic photographs, artwork, and text about the story of Asian Americans. It helps to tell the history of Americans of Asian descent and their life in the United States.
The museum was attacked on September 14, 2023. A man brought a sledgehammer to the museum and smashed windows. There were staff members and patrons at the museum at the time of the attack. It was a traumatic experience for them.
Multiple people called the police, but they were told that the police would not respond quickly because it was vandalism with no one being hurt.
Asian American groups have come out with press releases and statements to condemn the lack of concern from law enforcement and ask for more consideration of their community.
Virtually everyone knows that hate crimes were on the rise in the United States since COVID came on the scene. When China and Chinese people were continuously being blamed by politicians for COVID, there were Americans who committed hate crimes against Asian Americans. Racist rants against people of Asian backgrounds were happening every day.
The situation may have improved some, but the racism is continuing. Asian Americans are at risk of being the victims of hate crimes from people who are racist.
