The Masima: Pacific Islands Film Tour recently came to Salt Lake City, Utah, to highlight acclaimed filmmakers and emerging voices from the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. The films touch on stories of connection, traditions, resistance, and more within the Pacific Islander community. The films were curated and presented by The Salt Lake Film Society, Utah Pacific Islands Knowledge 2 Action Resource, and The Utah Pacific Islands Film Series.Masima 2023 is part of the annual Cultural Tours, which is a decade long celebration of history, culture, diversity, and heritage of Utah communities. After a reception with delicious treats, participants were able to see the documentary film, "Cane Fire." The film begins with a reference to a lost silent film of the same name which was made in 1934 by the director Lois Weber. The story had a spurned heroine burning the cane fields of her former lover. The new documentary film is by director Anthony Banua-Simon. It explains that the original film was shot on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Banua-Simon's great-grandfather was one of the Filipino plantation workers hired as an extra on the original film.
Banua-Simon uses his own family history to demonstrate Kauai's legacy of plantation colonialism. Archival footage is shown of how Hollywood beckoned tourists with its romantic version of the island paradise.
The director interviews many of his relatives, their neighbors and co-workers who still live on Kauai.
Cane Fire is an interesting documentary film which shows what the Native Hawaiians went through and still are experiencing to preserve their land.
