You have likely heard the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. That is the message of a presentation at a recent meeting on family history and keeping a journal. People gathered in person and via zoom to learn about the value of using photos along with the written words.

The message on a slide shown said: "A THOUSAND WORDS. A story is worth so very much more than a mere thousand words. Your life is a masterpiece! Preserve your masterpiece diligently in whatever form inspires you..."

Writing in a journal and doing family history have long been advised to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as others in society. Doing genealogy has become a favorite pastime for many people around the world. Finding information about family members who have passed on has been exciting to people who are interested in their heritage and their ancestors.

The presenter was President Owen Richardson, who is a local artist in Salt Lake City and a member of the Stake Presidency of the Salt Lake Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He taught about the value of adding photos to any record keeping of family history. He showed how much more interesting a story can be with pictures added to the telling. People often look at photos rather than reading all the words.

A former President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Spencer W. Kimball was a strong proponent of keeping a journal. He encouraged members of the Church and others to write in a journal for the sake of posterity.

People who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who have visited Utah and gone to the Family History Library have become interested in their ancestors and the story of their own families. Perhaps they were assisted at the Library by missionaries who helped them find some names and stories of their ancestors. It encouraged them to do further study and to become involved in family history.

There are television commercials encouraging people to become interested in finding out more about their ancestors and people in their family tree. With the popularity of Ancestry.com and other genealogy related facilities, more people in the general public are becoming interested and involved in keeping records of their personal lives.

Owen Hall Richardson is a Utah artist living in Salt Lake City. Art has been a part of his life since he was a toddler.  He has taught private art classes as well as having taught art in the public school system for several years. He has worked for two years as an animator for Marvel, working on Spiderman, and also worked for Hanna Barbera doing art for Smurfs. Owen has spent many years doing caricature art, which is the "jazz" form of art or a "satirical" slant on portraiture. His art hangs on walls throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. President Richardson and his wife Amy shared some of their personal stories. He recalled how he saw his mother wake up early each morning to write in her journal.

There are many reasons to keep a journal. It is a good way to remember important happenings in your life. It can be therapeutic and inspirational. It will be interesting and valuable to your posterity.

Writing in a journal and doing family history should be fun and enjoyable. It does not have to be a burden. Family history should not interfere with living life fully and spending time with family and friends.
