Man arrested after being assaulted and called the N-word by Paragary’s parking lot attendant, witnesses say
Sacramento, Calif. - by Robert J Hansen
A Black man who was allegedly verbally and physically assaulted by Paragary’s employees and a parking lot attendant was arrested on Saturday night, according to witnesses.
A Paragary’s parking lot attendant "parking guy Kevin" was overheard repeatedly calling a Black man the N-word before cooks from Paragary's Midtown held the man down, according to a witness.
“Kevin called the cops and tried to hide in the dispensary, the witness said. “Somebody put their knee on his neck and started punching the Black guy … in the face."
A Sacramento Police spokesperson said officers responded to multiple calls regarding a large fight occurring in the 1400 block of 28th St.
“Upon arrival , officers detained a suspect who was identified by bystanders,” the police spokesperson said.
According to an employee at Paragary’s who requested to remain anonymous, the parking lot attendant Kevin, has been banned from the premises.
“So sad this is what it took to finally make that happen,” the employee said. “But thankful he won’t be around to verbally assault anyone else.”
The employee only has verbal confirmation but has been told by management that Kevin is no longer to operate in the parking lot at any capacity.
Police say they conducted an investigation and contacted multiple witnesses and victims.
Based on the investigation, the detained suspect was arrested for multiple charges including elder abuse, battery, and a violation of parole.
The Sacramento Police Department takes all allegations of bias seriously.
The investigation remains active to determine what, if any, additional criminal offenses occurred.
Multiple reports from dinners at Paragary’s say this isn't the first time Kevin, Paragary's parking guy, has been heard calling Black community members the N-word and Anti-Asian epithets.
“I just went to R15 but I didn’t know about this till after I ate,” Lan Ster said on Facebook. “We all need to ban together and boycott Paragary, Cafe Bernardo, Centro Cocina and all the other Paragary restaurants until they change their staff and policies. This is atrocious.”
Meanwhile, the man that was called the N-word and was assaulted is sitting in jail.
The Sacramento National Lawyers Guild and its Mass Defense team is coordinating legal resources and support for him.
Paragary’s owner, Randy Paragary, was unable to be reached for comment.
