Woman shoots a gun at the Portland International Airport to avoid shooting her family

Strange news stories are all too common these days in the U.S., yet we can at least be grateful if no one gets killed or injured. That is the type of news story found at Oregon Live on Nov. 16, in an article written by Fedor Zarkhin, which describes a 47-year-old woman from Kennewick, Washington taking a loaded gun inside the Portland International Airport to shoot a couple of rounds off.

In an ill-advised and criminal method of getting attention and resolving her frustrations, the shooter, Laura Patterson, told a detective that “…she came to the airport because she needed to do something because she wanted to kill her family members.” The article also explains these family members were in Texas, which is a good thing considering the extremes Patterson was willing to take to vent her frustrations.

The article explains the shooting happened outside of a restroom area near a security checkpoint. Patterson took her gun out of her purse and shot it apparently up into the ceiling, as the airport maintenance department estimated the damage to the ceiling from the gunshots would cost $10,000 to fix.

A witness told police he heard two bangs and then saw a woman put the gun on the floor and ask if anyone was going to do anything, the article explains. The strange incident included Patterson telling police she shot the gun because she wanted to and she dropped the gun because she guessed she was crazy.

The article explains while Patterson was in custody she confessed she loaded the gun and brought it to the airport on purpose to do something because of her desire to kill her family living in Texas. Thankfully, this something didn’t kill or injure anyone, yet she could have just gone to a shooting range because now she is being charged with attempted murder among a dozen criminal charges.
