There are many great aspects of living in Oregon, yet it seems having a likable Governor isn’t one of them, at least, for most Oregonians. The newly minted Governor, Tina Kotek is carrying on the mantle of having the lowest approval ratings of any Governor in the US; the last Governor Kate Brown was a stalwart in consistently carrying this mantle throughout her scantly approved leadership.
The data supporting this dubious distinction comes from a new poll released by Morning Consult, the results being highlighted in an Oregon Live article written by Jamie Goldberg on April 19. The article explains Kotek has only a 42% approval rating, which is the lowest of any Governor in the US. In addition, she has a 39% disapproval rating with 19% of Oregonians on the fence about her performance so far.
The article points out another poll conducted by DHM Research in February showed 43% of respondents had a negative view of the new Governor Kotek and only a third of respondents said they had a very or somewhat positive view of her.
In response to the news of being the least approved Governor in the U.S., Kotek said, “I think there are a lot of Oregonians who don’t know me.” While that may be true, it is possible that when they get to know her, her approval ratings will be even worse rather than improving.
One thing is for sure, Oregon continues to elect divisive Governors who have an uncanny ability to cause the people they govern to disapprove of them. The article explains Governor Kotek still plans on visiting all 36 counties in her first year, which should be interesting considering 29 out of 36 voted Republican in the last election.
