Incident at Coal Creek Boat Launch: Attempted Murder Suspect Apprehended

Longview, Washington - September 7, 2023

On September 7, 2023, at approximately 12:31 PM, Cowlitz 911 received a report of a stabbing incident at the Coal Creek Boat Launch, situated at 6101 Ocean Beach Hwy, Longview. Deputies responded to the call and interviewed the victim, who had sustained injuries to his hand and legs. The victim informed authorities that he had been assaulted by his father, Mark Andrew Laurila, age 53, who had arranged to meet him at the boat launch.

According to statements provided by the victim and witnesses, during their meeting at the boat launch, Laurila attempted to stab his adult son in the neck. The victim was able to block the attack but sustained a hand injury in the process. Laurila proceeded to stab the victim multiple times in the legs while reportedly threatening his life. The victim and a witness managed to disarm Laurila, who subsequently left the scene.

Deputies later located Laurila at a residence on Niblett Way, where he was taken into custody without incident. He has been booked into the Cowlitz County Jail on charges of Attempted Murder in the 2nd Degree - Domestic Violence.
