In recent times, New York City has witnessed a dramatic rise in crime, with gun violence becoming the order of the day. The city residents are in shock due to the turn of events, and they hope that things will get better soon.
The city experienced a scary incident when gunshots were heard on 178th street at around 10 pm, and the outcome was serious injuries to an 8-year-old boy. The boy was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries on his shoulder, but he is expected to be discharged in a couple of days. A 39 years old man was also shot, and according to police, he was the intended target of the shooting. The police service reported that the man is an alleged gang member, had been arrested on a couple of occasions, and was a survivor of other two shootings in the city. The man was immediately arrested as the investigation into the matter began. According to some interviewed people, they referred to the city as a dangerous zone, and some are even afraid of going out due to the series of shootings in the area recently.
On the same night of the shooting, police responded to other five incidences that were gun-related, including one incident where a 33-year-old man was shot and seriously injured in East Flatbush. The city has recorded its highest shooting cases per year in the last decade. This has raised concern among the city residents and the leaders calling upon the law-enforcing bodies to take more action in curbing the situation. According to statistics by NYPD, the city has recorded 552 cases so far this year compared to 309 cases of shooting at the same time last year. That is an estimated increase of 118%, making a comparison with two years ago. However, most respondents seemed positive that the situation can still be controlled and a peaceful environment achieved. Most people think that the shootings could have spiked due to the frustrations of the Covid-19 pandemic and are hopeful that things will change and get better soon.
