East 6th Street in Austin, Texas, is known to be the home of hipsters.

What once was a street filled with old dive bars has been revitalized by foodies and live music venues. East 6th is now one of the most popular places for young people to hang out at night.

East 6th's original home-grown mom and pop dive bars attracted a hipper, artsier, and usually more inked clientele.

This was East Austin before East Austin was cool.

As we know and love it today, East Sixth is an eclectic blend of shops, restaurants, dives, and cocktail bars. It's also relatively new–in relation to Dirty or West Sixth–with the gentrification of East Austin surging in the past 10 years.

Here are a few of my favorite East Sixth Street bars you won't want to miss.

1. Latchkey

Head to East 6th Street and enjoy drinks, food, and make some memories. Latchkey also provides ping pong tables in its delightful outdoor plaza, woo-ing friends and family alike with a tempting menu filled with awesome eats from The Smokin' Rose Taco Joint.

Get it going with Mexicorn Dogs.

Nathan's Famous 100% beef franks wrapped in homemade corn tortillas... then deep-fried.Served with mustard and queso.

Open 7 days a week with libations, great food, movies, comedy, hot bartenders, and sports…oh yes..and ping pong & surprises.

Plus, you just got love the tagline:

2. Whisler's

True to the general ATX vibe, Whisler's is as quirky and unique as you would expect any place to be. Nestled in a hundred-year-old building on the Eastside, this cool and chic watering hole showcases hand craftyed cocktails and a good sized patio too.

Music inside & out, a Oaxacan Mezcal bar outside, and award-winning Thai food and great eats from Thai-Kun.

Whisler's offers something for everyone.

A spacious patio for the best shared moments and a romantic inside bar candlelit for an intimate date. The unique speakeasy Mezcaleria Tobala (only open on the weekends).

Be sure to try the HIGH AMBITION 14: Mezcal, Pineapple, Cucumber, Lime...the near perfect drink.

Pick your poison- we got you covered.

3. The Grackle

One of my personal favs is this little gem on East 6th, The Grackle. An excellent dive bar with cheap drinks and one of Austin's best whiskey selections.

With a dimly lit inside, dart boards, a pool table, an old school Ms. Pacman machine, a pure brass counter-mounted tap-tree, this place is special for sure.

Add to it a decent-sized outdoor patio, and now we're talking. Plus, it's never too crowded, and there are even parking spaces in front of the building.

An east 6th escape, come here to avoid overwhelming crowds, and finally, in The Grackle's parking lot is Arlo's, serving plant-based renditions of comfort food like hamburgers and french fries.

4. Lazarus Brewing

This East Side beer pub has a solid selection of local craft beer, plenty of seating at the bar. A shady patio for you and your pooch to sip a beer on and to check out all the passers-by.

Lazarus Brewing also has an excellent wine menu, a full espresso bar, plus a lovely kitchen dishing out some of the best street food you've ever had. Lazarus is the kind of place you can hit up right after the gym, a spot just to chill or even pop in after work.

If you've got a hankering for something different, they also sling coffee and some legit sandwiches.

And hey, you gotta love the quote on their website:

"From man's sweat and God's love, beer came into the world." — St. Arnold, AD 640

5. The Volstead

Classic vintage cocktail lounge mixed with a little bit of east side dive bar is the perfect way to describe The Volstead.

With regular happenings, this dance till you drop club has all sorts of specialty events on the calendar as well.

The Volstead is an inspiration to old-fashioned New Orleans. It offers a classic menu with seasonal house cocktails, your favorite tallboy beers, as well as a rotating draft beer selection.

Enjoy a drink in the lounge or on the large outdoor patio. The Volstead is connected by a large backyard patio with a sister venue Hotel Vegas.

With a mango habanero margarita and blackberry mule, how can you go wrong?

The Final Pour

Got a fav we didn't mention? Drop us a line in the comments, we'll be sure to add them to our next round of cool spots on the Eastside.
