In the early hours of Friday morning, tragedy struck a Lynwood 7-Eleven parking lot when a man working as an Uber driver was fatally shot by one of his passengers. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to the call at 1:33 a.m. and found the victim in the parking lot of the convenience store, located on the 2800 block of Imperial Highway west of State Street. Despite their swift response, the two suspects responsible for the shooting managed to flee the scene and were currently being sought by the authorities.
The victim, identified by his wife as Aaron Orozco, 38, was a father of two - a 9-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter - and had served in the Marine Corps. Orozco's wife, Sandra Medina, expressed her shock and disbelief at the situation, stating that she "can't believe this happened to our family. It's just so hard."
According to a statement from the sheriff's department, the victim had picked up two male adults as passengers during his rideshare shift. The suspects and the victim engaged in a physical altercation, during which one suspect produced a firearm and shot Orozco. The suspects then fled the scene in the victim's vehicle, which was later found abandoned by Century Station deputies, a short distance away from the location of the shooting.
The victim's name was not immediately released by authorities, and the suspects responsible for the shooting were still at large at the time of reporting. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers that Uber drivers and other rideshare workers face every day.
