Have you ever experienced that frustration when you have to repeat the same thing to your preteen over and over again? It’s like they have selective hearing! One mom shared a funny story about her own preteen’s annoying habit, and how the young man finally found the perfect solution.

On weekends, when the adults desperately wanted to sleep in, her preteen would always be up bright and early, making a racket. And of course, it would ruin their peaceful slumber. Imagine being woken up from a lovely dream! She wrote, “He won’t take the time to turn the knob and silently clasp the door closed. He’ll just push it shut, hard. Bang!”

This mom was at her wit’s end, trying to figure out how to get her son to understand the importance of being quiet in the mornings.

But then, one magical weekend, something amazing happened. The mom was able to sleep in without any disturbances whatsoever. She couldn’t believe it! And it didn’t end there. The following weekends were just as peaceful. So, naturally, she was dying to know what had caused this sudden change in her son’s behavior.

One day, while in her son’s room, she discovered the secret behind the newfound peace and quiet. “I closed his door to vacuum behind it, and I saw this taped to the back of his door.”

There, taped to the back of his door, was a reminder her son had written to himself. It said, “Be quiet. They’re sleeping.” How clever is that!

It turns out, our kids aren’t always ignoring us or being intentionally disrespectful. They actually listen and want to do the right thing, they just need a gentle nudge in the right direction. And once they figure out the best solution, they’ll put it into action and solve the problem themselves.

So, the next time you find yourself frustrated with your preteen, remember that they are capable of surprising us with their ingenuity and willingness to change. It just takes a little bit of patience and a reminder to get them on the right track. Happy parenting, and here’s to more peaceful mornings!
