A woman has perfected the art of buttering bread perfectly and with speed. There’s only one problem. Her technique is unusual and has divided the internet. Those who are unfamiliar with the method find it weird whilst those who also use it love it!
Teresa Basquine, a 47 year old full-time nanny from Cambridge, shared her bread buttering secret on TikTok. She uses a spoon, which she finds easier and more convenient to use than the traditional butter knife.
In an article by Birmingham Live Teresa admitted, “Nobody ever taught me and I don’t really know anyone else who does it, but I’ve always used a spoon. It just stops the bread or crackers breaking compared to using a knife!”
The story was reshared on Reddit garnering over a thousand comments.
Members of the SlowNewsDay sub users shared their own buttering triumphs and failures after seeing her video. One commented, “Okay, I actually do this and people do find it weird. It’s really easier people.”
Another agreed, adding, “When I worked in kitchens we’d do it because it was quicker and you’re less likely to tear the bread up.”
Yet another chipped in, “I learned this from watching my man making my sandwich at the local sandwich shop.”
Those with differing opinions also shared their thoughts with one commenting, “This is for people that buy a spreadable oil/water combo rather than butter. As an actual consumer of butter, it is indeed the butter knife that comes out as most useful.”

Teresa calls herself the “CEO of Hummus plate, Spoon technique & mini grater,” according to a report by the New York Post.
