Everyone encounters stressful situations at some point in their lives. Redundancy, homelessness, debt, separation, illness and bereavement are some of the biggest stressors.
How do YOU maintain composure in the face of chaos and stress?
Do you have a mantra that you repeat? Or is it as simple as taking a few deep breaths and walking away for a moment to collect yourself before returning to the situation at hand?
These are all great coping strategies.
I've found that being intentional about creating a positive mindset and remaining self-aware are two key components of maintaining composure in the face of chaos.
Taking ownership of your stress levels will help you remain composed while you're dealing with overwhelming situations, which is crucial when it comes to managing difficult circumstances. It enables you to take appropriate action to deal with the situation on your own or seek help.
When you don’t face up to or deal with stressful situations it can affect your physical, emotional and mental health.
This is what you can do:
- Step away from the situation if possible.
- Try not to take the situation personally.
- Don’t allow the stressful situation to determine your self-worth.
- Maintain an optimistic outlook.
- Reach out to your personal and/or professional network for support.
- Meditate - even if it’s only for 10 minutes.
- Remind yourself that “this too shall pass.”
You can't control what happens to you in life, but you can control how much power you allow stressful situations to have over your life. So if there's something stressful keeping you up at night right now, keep these tips in mind and try not to let it consume your thoughts or feelings when things get chaotic. The goal is always peace and ease!
