Britain's oldest reigning monarch is celebrating her birthday today.

Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her birthday today, 21 April. She's 96 years old, making her the oldest reigning monarch in British history.

The Queen was born on 21 April 1926, in London. She was only 25 years old when she became the queen in 1952 after her father, King George VI, died unexpectedly of lung cancer at age 56. At the time, the Queen was living in Kenya with her husband Prince Philip. The Prince passed away in April 2021, two months before turning 100.

According to a Sky News report, the monarch will celebrate her birthday privately at the Duke of Edinburgh's cottage on her Sandringham estate, a property she said her late husband "loved".

Today’s celebrations started with a gun salute at midday in Hyde Park, with a second gun salute an hour later at the Tower of London.

Twitter has been flooded with messages of congratulations from family members, and well-wishers from around the world. The Royal Family’s Twitter account shared a photograph of her aged two.

The toy company which makes Barbie dolls has marked the occasion by releasing a limited-edition doll of the monarch. The doll will be available to buy at Harrods, Hamley’s, Selfridges, John Lewis and from Amazon.

Since her coronation, the Queen has been an integral part of British life for more than half a century. As head of state in the United Kingdom and its 15 other commonwealth realms, she continues to shape the country's foreign and domestic policies.
