‘Wellness day’ off Friday announced for Oakland Unified

Oakland Unified School District announced a “wellness day” off for staff in place of a “professional development” day for teachers and students ahead of a “sickout” day planned for students and faculty on Thursday due to COVID-19 concerns, East Bay Times reports.

The move by Oakland Unified comes amid similar measures taken by schools across the U.S. in protest of what they believe to be unsafe conditions. Many districts are contending with teacher and staff shortages as well as widespread student absences.

Staff from Frick United Academy of Language, Montera Middle School, Madison Park Academy Upper 6-12, Skyline High School, Claremont Middle School and Roosevelt Middle School in a show of solidarity with students have indicated that they plan to call out sick on Thursday until the demands of students are met.

“Our demands aren’t really us demanding anything, it’s us telling the district to give us what they say they’ve been giving us because we haven’t received it,” said MetWest High School 10th grader Ayleen Serrano, who was one of three students who authored the petition. “It’s reminding them that we actually do know if we’re receiving it or not.”

District officials said that 200,000 KN95 masks were ordered for students last week and KN95 and N95 masks were distributed to school sites to ensure that every teacher had at least two KN95 masks and three three N95 masks. An additional 50,000 KN95 masks are planned to be delivered to sites across the district, according to district officials.
