We couldn't have a Masters-themed cocktail series without The Azalea.
The unofficial drink of Augusta National Golf Course, this libation pays homage to the iconic azalea bushes that bloom just in time for the tournament every year. The Augusta Chronicle recently gave golf fans a glimpse into history, sharing how azaleas became such an integral part of Augusta.
The flowers' connection to the property began in 1857 when Belgian nobleman Louis Mathieu Edouard Berckmans purchased an indigo plantation that then occupied the club’s present site. He and his son co-founded Fruitland Nurseries, specializing in azaleas.
When the legendary Bobby Jones retired from professional golf in 1930, he turned his attention to owning an incredible winter golf resort. He found the old Fruitland property and the rest is history. “Perfect!," Jones said when he first saw the land, "And to think this ground has been lying here all these years waiting for someone to come along and lay a golf course on it."
Jones and his friend, Clifford Roberts, purchased the land for $70,000. The duo then founded Augusta National, refurbishing the original plantation house as the golf course’s now-iconic clubhouse.
The first August National Golf Tournament was played in 1934, officially becoming The Masters in 1939.
The azaleas have bloomed just in time ever since.
