Philadelphia, Pa, is the sixth most populous city in the United States and a top destination for people who search for affordable housing, decent healthcare, diverse job opportunities, and a vibrant arts and culture scene.

However, the city also has a long history of crime. Although as with every city, there are both safe and unsafe areas, violence in certain parts of the city is an everyday occurrence.

What follows is a list of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Philadelphia for 2021. The rankings are calculated based on the number of violent crimes per 100,000 people for each neighborhood, compared to the Philadelphia violent crime average. Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery, and assault.

1. Tioga-Nicetown

Tioga-Nicetown, with a population of 17,382, has a crime rate of 201% greater than the Philadelphia average, which currently makes it Philadelphia's most dangerous neighborhood.

Most specifically, the number of violent crimes occurring in the city is 621% greater than the Philly average (you have a 1 in 11 chance of becoming a victim of crime), while property crime is 209% greater.

Exploring the neighborhood alone during night times is deemed greatly unsafe.

2. Alleghany West

According to statistics, the second most dangerous neighborhood in Philadelphia is Alleghany West, a poor African-American enclave with a population of 18,676 and a crime rate 181% greater than the Philadelphia average.

Almost 2,016 crimes per 100K people take place in the neighborhood, which means that you have a 1 in 13 chance of becoming a victim of crime.

It’s advised to avoid moving in the area if you’re a family with kids.

3. North Central

North Central is primarily a low-income neighborhood where the majority of its residents are African American and Puerto Rican.

Parts of the neighborhood can be very dangerous since North Central has a crime rate of 126% greater than the Philadelphia average. Any resident in the neighborhood has a 1 in 12 chance of becoming a victim of crime.

Thus, North Central is deemed an unsafe area for families, women, and solo travelers.

4. Strawberry Mansion

Last on our list is Strawberry Mansion, a neighborhood located east of Fairmount Park in North Philadelphia, with a population of 19,690.

Although the neighborhood isn't as dangerous as the previously mentioned ones, it's not among the safest either: the crime rate is 122% greater than the Philly average and approximately 2,016 violent crimes per 100k people take place.

The neighborhood is also extremely neglected by police, which is why it has acquired a reputation as one of the most dangerous areas of Philadelphia.
