Ever since we moved to Maryland in early August, my partner's co-workers have been telling him we needed to try Mezcal. It's a bit of a local favorite, apparently. We decided to go to Mezcal's Owings Mills location and try it out, and boy are we glad we did!
The restaurant itself has a lovely, lively atmosphere. Everyone was having a great time, the bar was busy, the booths were filled, and the music was great. Steaming plates of food were whizzing by our booth and looked delicious.
Our meal choices and prices
We decided to start with the Queso Fundido, which is chorizo sausage blended in melted cheese, tomatillo sauce, and onions ($11.99). A staff member mixed all the ingredients in a blazing hot skillet right next to our table and served it while the cheese was still bubbling. It was quite a theatrical experience.
It was delicious and the chorizo was very tasty. It was very oily due to the meat and cheese, but we still ate quite a bit of it. My partner wants to come back and have it again with drinks as a casual outing, but I don't know how much oil I can take!
The top food platters in this photograph make up the Mezcal Sampler ($17.99). It includes a chicken enchilada suiza, a beef tip burrito, a chicken enchilada, a chile relleno, and a ground beef taco. It comes with rice and beans.
My boyfriend was shocked by the amount of food he received. He ended up saving half for dinner the next day, but he demolished most of his favorite item, which was the chile relleno. There was nothing he didn't love on his plate.
I ordered the Chicken Fajitas ($16.99), which came with a skillet of sizzling chicken and sautéed vegetables, as well as sides of guacamole salad, sour cream, pico de gallo, tortillas, rice, and a choice or refritos or charro beans. I also had the option of vegetarian rice if I desired.
Mine was delicious. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the spices on it were so tasty. It came in a steaming skillet and I had a great time making my own fajitas with everything on the plates. I had zero complaints, and it was one of the best fajita experiences I've ever had.
To go, I got a Tres Leches Cake ($6). It was very good, perfectly moist and I could taste the different types of cream.
This place is pricey, but it's worth your money. We each got another meal from our dinners, that's how much food we received. Everything was excellent and the staff was very attentive. The restaurant was lively and the atmosphere was super enjoyable.
We're very excited to go back and try out their bar drinks and have more of the Queso Fundido! You can view Mezcal's menu here. Every item we ordered happened to be $2 cheaper in the restaurant than is stated on the website menu, interestingly enough, so take that in mind when looking at the prices! Go have some amazing food at Mezcal!
