A Routine Stop Turns Hostile
A seemingly ordinary Wednesday took a sudden and dangerous turn in Waterville, Maine. What began as a straightforward traffic stop for suspected violations transformed into a high-tension scenario near the Fireside Inn on Main Street.
41-year-old Jeffrey Obert was initially pulled over by the local police. Unexpectedly, this stop took an alarming turn when Jeffrey’s father, Bruce Obert, aged 69, aggressively intervened.
Unexpected Turn of Events
Rather than a simple traffic violation resolution, the situation escalated drastically. Bruce Obert reportedly swerved his truck across the median, pulling up alongside the police officers. Eyewitnesses described that he then began to loudly confront the officers.
Things took an even darker turn when Bruce Obert, upon being pursued by an officer, halted near the adjacent Walmart. Allegedly, without provocation, he assaulted the officer. During this altercation, Jeffrey Obert, initially issued a mere warning, was allowed to leave.
But peace was short-lived. That same officer, having witnessed the assault at Walmart, immediately circled back to assist his colleague.
Before backup could arrive, Jeffrey, alongside his passenger, 33-year-old Steven Kirkwood, stormed the Walmart scene. Both men then allegedly joined in the assault on the officers.
Thankfully, before the situation could worsen, reinforcements arrived. The three men, having caused considerable chaos and alleged harm, were taken into custody.
Facing the Consequences
The charges levied against the trio are stern. Bruce Obert faces charges of refusing to submit to arrest or detention, assault, and failing to stop for an officer. Meanwhile, both Jeffrey Obert and Steven Kirkwood have been charged with assault and obstructing government administration.
This unnerving event showcases the unpredictability of daily police duties and the potential dangers lurking even in routine tasks.
