A growing minority population is making America an increasingly diverse nation. The US Census Bureau estimates that over 40% of the country's population is nonwhite. In some estimates, the US will become a "majority-minority" country by 2044.
Self-described entrepreneur and small business owner Vicky Sanchez calls this opportunity “God-sent” and “in-time” as she seeks ways to cut costs related to business expenses. Vicky not only sells, but also designs and customizes medical scrubs for her customers at her store inside the Hillcroft Shopping Plaza in Houston.
In addition to social and cultural implications, demographic changes have economic implications as well. The minority population is one of the major drivers of the U.S. economy, yet they face a range of challenges in the workforce, including wage gaps and underrepresentation in non-labor careers like banking and tech industry.
Minorities are underrepresented among new businesses, or startups. Startup firms employ 2% of workers in the US and make up about 9% of businesses in the first two years of operation, according to the US Census Bureau. Despite minority representation in the US population being over 40%, minority-owned startups account for only 27% of all startups.
Asked about how the grant will help her grow and impact her community, Vicky says “it all comes down to generational wealth” and “creating a path” for fellow underrepresented minorities to bridge the gap in business and job opportunities within Houston.
Vicky started her small business at the start of the pandemic in 2020 after she was laid off her restaurant waitress job. Reflecting on her passion and her prior experience in the health industry, she wanted to give back to health care professionals who fought hard and continue to fight for the health of those with COVID and other illnesses. She combined her hobby as a seamstress and fashion to come up with Sanchez Custom Scrubs. She is happy for the path she has chosen and urges others to follow their dreams as well.
