Popstar Adele recently revealed she contracted Jock Itch in Las Vegas: Just what is it?

During her surprising revelation, Adele recently said that she received a disappointing gift from her Las Vegas residency: Jock itch. This revelation happened when the popstar was performing at Caesars Palace Colosseum as part of her "Weekends with Adele" Las Vegas residency.

Adele’s revelation is timely as it sheds light on a common condition that affects a lot of people. Also, it is common for jock itch to be confused with a sexually transmitted disease, mostly because it affects private areas.

Just What Is Jock Itch?

According to Healthline, Jock itch is primarily a fungal infection. It is scientifically known as tinea cruris and it mainly affects the skin around the groin area. The Healthline resource also points out that the condition is caused by a species of fungus known as dermatophytes. These fungi thrive in warm, moist environments—making the groin region an ideal spot for their growth.

What Causes Jock Itch?

As Adele notes, Jock itch is crude. It also has no bias when it comes to its victims – it can strike anyone. So, what exactly leads to this uncomfortable itch-fest in the nether regions?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the number one cause of jock itch is warm and moist environment. For instance, in Adele’s case, her jock itch as caused by excessive sweating in the groin area because she wears Spanx during her performances. When she sweats in Spanx, it creates an idea environment where the offensive fungi can grow and cause jock itch.

The Cleveland Clinic also identifies other causes of jock itch to include tight clothing, increased physical activity, weak immune system, and contact with an infected person or clothing.

How Do You Know You Have Jock Itch?

As revealed by WebMD, the first and most common way to tell you have jock itch is that you will experience intense itching within the infected area. This itching might be accompanied by a red, circular rash on the thighs, buttocks, and groin. WebMD adds that people with jock itch might also experience a burning sensation and peeling of the skin.
