Antigua: The Ultimate Romantic Caribbean Island

The Beach at Blue Waters HotelKelly & Kody, @positravelty

95 miles of coastline, white sand, vibrant blue and crystal clear waters… need I say more? I know there are a lot of options when planning a trip to the Caribbean and you can trust me when I say this: Antigua and Barbuda are not to be overlooked. These islands are best known for their romantic appeal, the white and pink sand beaches and the incredible kindness shown by the welcoming locals. This is, without a doubt, a magical place where love and wanderlust collide.

As a professional traveler there are a lot of things that I look at when planning trips, determining locations, developing my schedule to find balance for work and pleasure, etc. I know that our Instagram @positravelty makes it seem like it is all fun and stress free living, but this is because the moments we share are meant to look that way - nothing but bliss and happiness. Now, that isn’t to say that they aren’t because they definitely are, but capturing the content that we produce takes a lot of time and effort and trips can easily become exhausting. Okay, okay… why am I bringing this up? I am mentioning this because this is the first time we have taken a trip somewhere, had a packed schedule, and not felt burnt out by the end of it. This says a lot about Antigua and Barbuda.

The first thing that I noticed on arrival was the relaxed atmosphere. I know that most islands have this, but it felt different in this destination - even more relaxed than I expected. Antigua is a small island and the population is quite small as well. Only about 100K people live on the island and that certainly helps to keep the island a little more “quiet” overall. The traffic wasn’t crazy, the roads weren’t lined with cars or shops, and the beaches offered all the privacy and space you could ask for.
Beach Days in AntiguaKelly & Kody, @positravelty

As I mentioned previously we had a packed itinerary with an average of two excursions a day, one before lunch and one after. I was very impressed with the intimacy of the activities, the romantic vibes and the stunning style of the excursions… sunset sailing cruises, helicopter rides (click HERE to see our video from that experience!), painting and picnics on the beach, swimming with stingrays, candlelit dinners poolside in private villas, live music at local restaurants and horseback riding on the beach. Yeah, sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it? Not surprisingly this destination has been named the Caribbean’s Most Romantic Destination four times in a row now and it makes sense. This place is incredibly romantic.

Not only are these two islands perfect for a couples getaway, but it is outstanding for weddings. Fun fact: there is no waiting time or residency requirement for the issuance of a wedding license. The entire island is accessible, enchanting and gives this intense feeling of euphoria at all times. The island is also incredibly safe and anyone can feel at home while exploring all that the island has to offer.
Infinity Pool at Tamarind Hills, AntiguaKelly & Kody, @positravelty

We had our stay split between two beautiful properties on different parts of the island so that we could experience two different areas in depth. We first stayed at the gorgeous, southwestern cliffside property known as Tamarind Hills, and then moved on to stay at Blue Waters Hotel in the north. If you are looking for seclusion, utter calm and an escape from society we would recommend spending time at Tamarind hills. The ocean view villas have a gorgeous, modern design and many are equipped with infinity pools that overlook the ocean and the distant island of Montserrat. They boast full kitchens and space for parking so that you can truly make yourself at home and spend your trip removed from the standard "coming and going" of most resorts while still receiving the amenities needed to make your trip comfortable. There is a perfect white sand beach just a minute’s walk away and they are currently finalizing construction on a community area that will feature a bar, a restaurant and a pool once completed.
Poolside at Blue Waters Hotel, AntiguaKelly & Kody, @positravelty

Blue Waters Hotel makes the list for us as a definite option for those looking to socialize a bit, potentially bring their children along, and enjoy an all-inclusive experience. There are package options available and all-inclusive is something that you would opt in to if that is the experience you wish to have. They have restaurants and bars on property, too many pools to count and beachfront that lines the property. This is a place where you can arrive with no preparation and settle in immediately due to everything being just a few steps away. The property is absolutely stunning as well. Beautiful landscaping, sunset views and the rooms are very open and beachy by design.

Out of all the excursions we would highlight the helicopter ride, the scooter snorkeling, stingray city, the sunset sailing cruises and the horseback riding on the beach (if you can schedule it for golden hour and sunset). Overall we give Antigua a definite "YES" for anyone looking for a new island destination to explore this year. Get those bags packed and book your flights!
