Columbia, South Carolina - The South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) has an Accessibility Morning meet and greet with Maisy Mouse on May 13, 2023. This program provides free access for families of children, teenagers, and young adults who would benefit from a sensory-friendly experience and a quieter and calmer setting at the SCSM.
This inclusive event provides FREE general admission to guests who are neurodiverse, autistic, or have other disabilities so they can experience the museum’s exhibitions at their own pace and enjoy other special activities. ASL Interpretation will be provided by the SC School for the Deaf and Blind from 9-11am (also at the 9:30 am character reading and the 9:45 am 4-D show).
May Special Activity
ASL Scavenger Hunt presented by Beginnings SC! SCSM and Beginnings SC have developed mini ASL displays hung throughout the building. Guests will be given a guide which will walk them around to about 10 different spots in the building and they'll be able to learn how to sign something at each stop. Copies of the map are available at the front desk.
The museum also has several other accessibility tools available - just ask an educator upon arrival! Guests are encouraged to pre-register. The free 9:45 am show tickets can only be reserved on-site on the day of the event. There is no age limit and you do not have to attend the activities. Guests are welcome to simply come and enjoy the museum if they'd like.
