St. James Parish Hospital provides Monoclonal Antibody IV Treatments

Pierre St-Jean

St. James Parish, LA - Monoclonal Antibody IV Treatments are now available at St. James Parish Hospital to COVID-19 patients who have a doctor's referral. These treatments may reduce the likelihood of severe symptoms and/or hospitalization caused by COVID-19. Patients must present within 10 days of the onset of symptoms.

COVID-19 vaccines are not the same as monoclonal antibody treatments. Vaccines provide active immunity by activating the body's own immune response. It may take two doses of the vaccine and several weeks for the body to develop this immune response. Monoclonal antibodies are created in a laboratory and administered directly to patients via infusion to aid in the fight against COVID-19. Monoclonal Antibody Treatments assist patients who have COVID-19, at high risk of severe illness in avoiding hospitalization and/or disease progression by directly introducing the antibodies that the body requires to protect itself.

The FDA has approved monoclonal antibody treatments for patients 12 years of age and older who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last ten days and are at high risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19. Your healthcare provider can assist you in determining whether or not you are a good candidate for treatment.

Before taking the treatments, patients will be educated and involved in the decision to receive the infusion. COVID positive patients seen by hospital physicians, as well as those treated in the ER and Urgent Care will be evaluated to see if they are a suitable candidate for Monoclonal Antibody Therapy. Patients who choose the treatment will be required to sign a consent form.

This treatment has proven to be effective at St. James Parish Hospital. At this time, all patients receiving a Monoclonal Antibody Infusion at St. James Parish Hospital are able to recover from COVID-19 at home.
