New Orleans Saints' 2021 opponent profile: Dallas Cowboys

NEW ORLEANS, LA-- The New Orleans Saints have announced they will host the Cowboys on Week 13 of the 2021 NFL Season. The game will be broadcasted on Thursday, December 2 at Fox, NFL Network, and Amazon starting from 7:20p.m.

Previously: The Saints defeated the Cowboys narrowly 12-10 in Week 4 of the 2019 season. That time, no touchdowns were scored by both teams as Saints' kicker Wil Lutz booted four field goals and accumulated the team's points in the win.

In 2021, the Dallas Cowboys will have Mike McCarthy as a new head coach, a former Saints offensive coordinator in the early 2000s—he previously led the Green Bay Packers as head coach from 2006 to 2018, leading them into one Super Bowl win.

Entering the 2020 NFL season, the Cowboys had great expectations and potential after a disappointing 8-8 finish and missing the playoffs in 2019. Moreover, the Cowboys are still led by quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Yet, the management opted not to retain Jason Garrett's coaching staff except for offensive coordinator and former quarterback Kellen Moore.

Unfortunately, 2020 has turned into disappointment as Prescott got hurt in the fifth week, and the offense faltered. Dallas then finished with six wins and ten losses as they missed the playoffs yet again, this time in the season's end as they fell to the New York Giants and conceded the NFC East championship to the Washington Football Team.

Record-wise, the Cowboys lead the Saints in the all-time meeting with 17 wins. On the other hand, the Saints only won 13 games against the Jerry Jones-owned team.

After a dismal 2020 in the offseason, Dallas added some players. The Cowboys signed defensive linemen Brent Urban, Carlos Watkins, and Tarell Basham, along with defensive back Keanu Neal, who planned to be moved into outside linebacker position.

They also added veteran offensive tackle Ty Nsekhe and tight end Jeremy Sprinkle

However, the Cowboys lost some of their vital players. Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie left the team and joined Cincinnati Bengals, Texas-born Quarterback Andy Dalton headed to Chicago Bears, and offensive tackle Cam Erving left to Carolina Panthers.

One more thing to notice for the Saints during the Week 13 game is the Cowboys' lack of depth in the special teams. They lost long snapper L.P Ladouceur and punter Chris Jones to free agency.
