SHAKOPEE, MN — The City Council is considering a new contract with Dick’s Sanitation Inc. to handle the city’s garbage.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the council will consider a new five-year contract with the sanitation company, replacing the current hauler, Republic Services. The new garbage hauler will take care of all residential properties’ sanitation needs, including collection, disposal, and billing.
The replacement plan follows the concerns regarding city-wide refuse and recycling service, including points on cart management, trial organic collection, and customer satisfaction improvements.
After an interview process through four qualified responses, Dick’s Sanitation Inc. (DSI) was determined to fit the city’s requirements. The contract is now reaching final approval. Once approved, there will be a transition from Republic Services to DSI beginning January 2, 2022.
Though most of the transition will happen behind the scene, residents will be notified if there should be any necessary steps regarding their account information before the transition occurs.
The DSI will purchase and continue to use the existing garbage and recycling carts to make the transition efficient. However, residents who have a ‘City of Shakopee’ garbage and recycling carts will not receive a new one, while those with a Republic Services bin will have theirs swapped. Swaps will also be applied to waste carts.

Though there are some concerns about the new pricing due to the transition, the council ensures that the new contract will give the Shakopee residents the best rates possible with high-quality service and upgraded efficiency.
