YOUNGSTOWN, OH — The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is currently on the lookout for a hardworking individual to fill the position of Clerk to help customers of the library with their accounts, materials, and basic library equipment questions as well as directing customer questions.

The Clerk works under the direction of a Supervisor and they perform an array of duties in relation to the circulation and maintenance of library materials. Ideal candidates for this position are those who love working with people and can create a welcoming environment.

Among the responsibilities of a Clerk is to provide excellent customer service and to act as the “face” of the library, helping customers with questions, transactions, and also library collections. They also use a variety of different methods to provide assistance including phone, face-to-face interactions, and electronic methods. They must use good judgment when they interact with customers and other members of the staff. They also facilitate customers’ library usage and create a warm environment for the customers.

To qualify for this position, candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. They must also have great customer service skills, a passion for interacting with the public, and a positive attitude. They must be able to learn and apply library policy with good situational judgment, as well as work as part of a team under a supervisor’s direction.

Additionally, candidates must have basic computer skills on top of being able to learn library-specific operating systems. They must be able to deal with the public effectively, and communicate and exchange information well. The work of this position also requires candidates to be able to collect, prepare, and compile work documents as well as operate business office equipment, harmoniously work with other staff members, follow assigned work schedules, policies, and procedures accordingly, and maintain a positive work attitude and good attendance record.

Clerks work during days, evenings, and Saturdays on rotating shifts in various locations throughout the Mahoning County system. Generally, the full-time hours are 40 hours per week, while part-time hours are 24 hours per week. Occasionally, clerks will travel to other branches. They must have the availability to work extended or non-traditional hours as necessary. It may also be required to participate and attend promotional events and off-site meetings.

Clerks receive a pay rate starting from $11.36 per hour and the compensation includes a pension plan with the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS). To learn more about this position and apply for it, visit this page.
