CLEVELAND, OH — The 8th annual Gohio Commute competition will be held this year. It is a competition that is held annually by NOACA and its partners. It is a friendly competition that recognizes and rewards employers who encourage employees to choose alternatives to drive-alone commutes.

It encourages smart commuting as it benefits the company, the employees and the region. The new challenge began on 28 June and will end on 23 July 2021.

Businesses, non-profits and agencies in Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Cuyahoga and Medina Counties are eligible to join. NOACA and the sponsors will announce the gold, silver and bronze medalists this fall. Top-rated employers will be announced at the award ceremonies.

There will be four categories: Small Business, Large Business, Small Non-Profit/Government, and Large Non-Profit/Government. The grand prize will recognize winners from these categories.

The 2021 sponsors of NOACA are Greater Cleveland RTA, Sustainable Cleveland, Cuyahoga County Department of Sustainability, Laketran, and Bike Cleveland.

To participate, your organization must register between 29 June and 23 July. You can download and complete the 2021 Commuter Choice Awards at the website.

To build your Gohio Commute subsite email gohiocommute@mpo.noaca.org. A subsite is needed to track employee trips during Clean Air Challenge.

After that, you are expected to encourage employees to register on Gohiocommute.com and link it to your subsite

During August 1 - 31, employers are expected to encourage employees to participate in the Clean Air Challenge.

Therefore, employees must record travel on Gohio Commute, especially during the month of August.

Employers must promote the challenge and the commuter choice awards to employees. After that, they must share their standing and savings from the Gohio commute leaderboard, so that it inspires and encourages other participants.

To get more information, email gohiocommute@mpo.noaca.org or call 216 241 2414 x285.

Twenty-three organizations with more than 103,000 employees participated in 2020. These organizations saved more than $16,000 in commuting costs and avoided ten tons of carbon dioxide release.

They also implemented innovative practices and policies, which are: creating and promoting subsite on Gohio committee; providing free and subsidized transit passes; offering outdoor and indoor parking for bicycles; allowing employees to telecommute and have a flexible schedule; providing shower, changing areas and lockers for cyclist and pedestrians; and creating a parking cash-out program that rewards employees who didn’t drive alone.

The 2020 Commuter Choice Award Winners are as follows: Gold: Downtown Cleveland Alliance MetroHealth Medical Center; Silver: Cleveland Clinic Century Cycles; and Bronze: Case Western Reserve University Cleveland Foundation University Circle Inc.
