Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer, when the sky gets clearer and families flock to visit the Cleveland Metroparks to soak up the view and enjoy a picnic. As Cleveland Metroparks spans more than 24,000 acres across Northeast Ohio, visitors will have a lot of space to catch up with friends and family. And as the holiday is fast approaching, Cleveland Metroparks has urged all of its visitors to celebrate safely.

Due to the expected surge in visitation at Edgewater Park later this week, visitors are urged to arrive by early afternoon. Park entrances will be closed to traffic as the parking lots reach the maximum capacity.

Cleveland Metroparks Police will patrol around the park to assist in parking and safety. Guests should immediately notify Cleveland Metroparks Police Headquarters at 440-333-4911 or 911 for emergencies when immediate action is required. Non-life-threatening situations should be reported to Cleveland Metroparks Police by calling 440-331-5530. Further, Cleveland Metroparks Police will prohibit guests to park in undesignated areas, in picnic areas or in grassy areas, for safety reasons.

The park rangers also encourage guests to maintain the cleanliness of the park by bringing trash bags or taking home their disposable items. Guests will face a fine for littering.

Cleveland Metroparks also offers summer water activities for its guests. Visitors must pay attention to freighters navigating the river and avoid staying in the middle of the river when a freighter is approaching. It is advised for paddlers to monitor the location of freighters using a VHF radio and/or AIS system.

For safety reasons, guests are recommended to swim only during lifeguarded hours, which begin on June 5. Updates regarding the activity can be found on clevelandmetroparks.com/beaches.
