On the first notable day of Spring of 2022, The Create and Be Studio in Stroudsburg, PA held an Artists’ Reception for their 3rd annual Black Culture In The Burg Art Exhibition on Friday March 18th to Celebrate Black Art, Creativity, and Black Culture In The Pocono region of Northeast PA. The exhibition featured the work of Stephanie Orellana, Donte Stokes, Albert Shivers, Caren Shapiro, Tyronn Brewington, Ivy Fox, Marcus Natt, Sylvia Thompson, and Courtney Natt. A television monitor that presented the artists was placed near the gallery’s entrance as they voiced their views on the exhibition's theme. The evening also included a screening of the film titled, “RED” that was Written and Directed by Tyronn Brewington.
The gathering for the event was a large one which included Maureen Madden who is the State Representative of the 115th District of Pennsylvania and Jennifer Shukaitis who is the Township Supervisor in Stroud Township, PA and a Candidate for Senator of the 40th Senatorial District in Pennsylvania. The conversations shared during the event consisted of numerous topics but most were focused upon the art that was on display. Chats with the artists enhanced the experience as their words and insights allowed the participants to gain an even deeper perspective of the works.
After a while, The Co Founders of the gallery, Sylvia Thompson and Courtney Natt, greeted the gathering in order to share their words of appreciation for their endearing support. It was during this time that it was announced the screening of the film, “RED,” was about to begin and the process of setting up chairs commenced. The television monitor was moved to the front of the viewing area and an introduction to the film soon followed.
The film, “RED,” is presented in several sections with a character referred to as Dr. Moxy provides a link between them. A question and Answer session with the writer and director of the film, Tyronn Brewington, took place after the screening. It was during this time did someone in the audience mentioned that the film reflected the later work of director David Lynch (“The Straight Story” and “Mulholland Drive”). This mention brought a more comprehensive understanding of the cinematic techniques utilized in the film as many of Lynch’s surreal elements found in his work that are known to disturb, offend, and/or mystify their audiences are also found in Mr. Brewington’s work which enhanced its impressive qualities.
