If you are looking for a pet that will obey your every command these are the breeds that are probably best avoided.

A huge number of us decided to welcome new puppies into our homes in the last couple of years – Kennel Club figures show dog ownership soared by nearly 8 percent when the pandemic hit and post-lockdown demand for four-legged friends remain high.

There are a whopping 221 different breeds of pedigree dogs to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds, so there’s plenty of thinking to do before you select your family’s latest addition.

One of the traits that vary massively between breeds is stubborn – some dogs are happy to do what they are told, while others will only listen to their owner when it suits them.

So, here are the 10 most stubborn breeds of dogs.

Akita

The Akita was bred as a hunting dog in its native Japan. It's an intelligent breed but notoriously belligerent - they will simply walk away if they don't fancy doing what they are told.

Afghan Hound

The gorgeous Afghan Hound is the supermodel of the dog world - and just as aloof as a millionaire catwalk star. In short, they think they own their human.

Bulldog

Some Bulldogs can actually be fairly well behaved and respond to commands well. If you don't get their training right early in life though they can be incredibly stubborn and show their owner little in the way of respect.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is an incredibly lazy and easy-going breed of dog. Unfortunately, this means they are also likely to ignore you when you want them to do something. Good luck getting a sleepy Basset Hound off your bed.

Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is well known for being very difficult to train. Even when they are though, there's no way of knowing if they will bother putting their training into practice.

Chihuahua

The smallest dog in the world is also one of the most stubborn. The Chihuahua needs plenty of patience - or just an acceptance that stubbornness is part of this breed's charm.

Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell is a small dog with a big personality whose love of fun and games comes before sitting, staying or walking to heel.

Weimaraner

The Weimaraner was bred by royalty as hunting dogs. They still have a regal demeanor, often regarding their owners as commoners who need to be humored rather than obeyed.

Dachshund

First-time Dachshund owners may be surprised to find that their adorable pet does exactly what it wants when it wants. Don't worry though - it's perfectly normal for a sausage dog to think they are the boss. It's probably best just to do as they say.

Shar-pei

The wrinkly Chinese Shar-pei may look adorable but inside that cute exterior is a stubborn streak a mile long. Obedience classes are recommended but may not make any difference to this most independent-minded breed of dog.
