Bookstagram and the general book community has been raving over this one for months. I devoured this book in just a few sittings and over just a couple days, and my conclusion is that it;s so worth all the hype because yes, IT IS THAT GOOD!
This is a fictional stroy about a light-skinned black woman in the 50's who pretends to be white her whole life while her twin sister still lives as a black woman. Once seperated, their journeys of a newly white and still black women are dictated by their skin color. Years later their daughters meet ip in an unlikely way and the story unfolds from there, showcasing how different life can be with the simple change of skin tone.
One the most striking things to me about this story is just how much of a social construct race actually is. What I truly appreciated was that the author didn't try to give us a Disney fairtale ending. And something about her writing style makes this tory so magical.
I highly recommand this book. If you haven't read it yet, add it to your 2021 TBR. It was selected as one of Barake Obama's favourites too. And I also heard HBO is going to make series based off this novel!
