The close-knit world of MMA is mourning the loss of one of its own this week after a young fighter died at the age of 27 following a tragic motorcycle accident in Italy late last week.

27-year-old higher Iuri Lapicus reportedly died Monday due to the injuries he sustained in the accident. He was reportedly riding his motorcycle in Milan, Italy, last Friday when he lost control of the bike, crashed, and was thrown several feet from the site of the crash. He was rushed to the hospital via helicopter where he remained in a coma until his death, per TMZ.

One Championship issued the following statement in response to the death of one of their own, per ESPN:

"The ONE Championship team is heartbroken over the tragic passing of Iuri Lapicus," the promotion wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones at this difficult time."

Lapicus, who was born in Moldova, was 14-2 in his professional fighting career, rattling off 14 straight victories to start his professional career before becoming a title challenger in the One Championship promotion. His biggest fight came against former UFC champion Eddie Alvarez, a bout that ended in a controversial no-contest after Lapicus landed several unintentional blows to the back of Alvarez's head. His most recent fight was back in August, a loss to Zebaztian Kadestam.
