The world can be a wicked wicked place that we live in. It was proven today when a woman was charged with manslaughter in her own miscarriage. The woman Brittany Poolaw suffered a miscarriage while using methamphetamine. This a very harmful drug to the person using it let alone to the fetus in a person's body, but the problem the National Advocates for Pregnant Women believe that it is her body and what she did to her body did not cause the child to die.
If you go all the back to grade school it we learned we are what you eat. I remember watching Ms. Frizzle on the Magic School Bus, a show that came on pbs. They had an episode when one of the kids ate to many carrots and they turned orange, she explained how the things we put in our body become a part of us. Maybe she missed that episode or did not pay attention in school but it is obvious she did not understand cause the the drugs she put in her body was found the fetus. The 21 year old Brittany Poolaw was charged with first degree manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison.
An autopsy of her baby fetus showed that methamphetamine was in the baby's system, yet the NAPW Executive Director Lynn Paltrow says there was no evidence the miscarriage was caused by the meth she used.Well what else could it be it's like the owl asking how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop. The world may never know I guess. She fears that prosecuting the woman will have a chilling effect that prevents women from seeking medical help. She was not looking for medical help when she was using and she was not thinking about her little one growing in her womb. A medical examiner found a congenital abnormality, placenta abruption and chorioamnionitis, where bacteria infect the membranes that surround the fetus, and did not list the use of a controlled substance as the cause a miscarriage. Oklahoma's murder and manslaughter laws do not apply to miscarriages that occur before 20 weeks, nor does it outlaw abortions. The jury found her guilty after less than three hours of deliberation.
The detective in the case stated that " when she found out she was pregnant she didn not know if she wanted the baby or not and she was not familiar where to get an abortion." It is unknown whether or not she took the meth to have a miscarriage. That is the dilemma in the situation if it can be proving then does that mean they gave her the time for no reason.
