Dear Netflix, you've been an essential companion in this challenging year.

I honestly don't know how I would have gotten until here without you, so thank you for your loyalty!

I can confidently say that all of us, millennials, remember zapping through the cable television, trying to find something interesting, when there was nothing to watch. Our grandma knitting and binge-watching the oldest movies that she could find, always when your favorite show was on.

So you bought yourself a small tv and a VHS player, ready to take one of these Blockbuster trips. Ah, didn't we love it, though?

Yes, yes, we did, but please don't take me back. I love me some Netflix.

I have to admit that it disappointed me a few times this year. After the release of the cringe-worthy movie Cuties that almost had me canceling my subscription, and after they canceled, the series "A.D. The Bible Continues" on a cliffhanger, leaving us wanting for more. On the other hand, it has also made me laugh, tear, and have a good time with my family, so I'm ready to forgive even the unforgivable.

This year, the pandemic has brought many changes to my life. I started working from home mainly and had more time to binge-watch my favorite series, and these are my latest favorite ones.

  1. The Queen's Gambit

It deserves number one, as every series that you cannot stop watching.

The story, taking place from 1950 to 1960, is a historical drama based on the homonymous Walter Tavisi's novel.

After her parent's death, Beth starts living in an orphanage, where she struggles with emotional and addiction problems.

One day her school teacher sends her to the basement, where she gets fascinated by a janitor playing Chess. From that moment on, the game becomes an obsession for Beth so much that she quickly becomes a prodigy player.

In my opinion, the storyline is simply genius and very original! It takes a lot to make a series featuring Chess as a protagonist, enough to increase the public's interest in the game and please the Chess community at the same time.

Being very passionate about cinematography, I couldn't help but notice the brilliant photography and attention to detail, not to talk about the outfits, Spot on!

Worth a mention is the exceptional acting work of Anya Taylor-Joy Bill Camp. Pleasing, classy, and versatile, she's the best choice for this role.

I am not surprised to discover her attachment and passion for the character, which comes across the screen and keeps us wanting more.

I don't want to spoil it too much for you, so go ahead, try it out and leave a comment. I'm so curious to know if you feel the same about this masterpiece.

2. How To Get Away With Murder

Season 6 was finally released, and we've all been waiting for it.

If you have never watched this series, you should start from season one.

It's hard to get a good understanding of the plot and characters if you start so far in the story.

This season is better than season 5, which I couldn't finish. I found myself asking my hubby for a recap of what happened in some of the episodes.

I don't know if it's just me or when a series has too many seasons, I either get tired of it or lose interest, except for Sex And The City, I can never get tired of that.

Back to our drama, we see an exceptional Viola Davis here, as usual. This time she surpassed herself with outstanding acting skills, mostly on the most intense scenes.

In this season, I find the storyline to be more captivating than the one before. The students finally get some cases of their own, which makes the plot refreshing. The junior lawyers' struggles give the episodes a more realistic feel and bring us closer to the characters.

3 Girlfriends

My husband remembers watching this Series 20 years ago. On the other hand, this was my first time watching it since it was never aired in Italy.

Funny, light-hearted, you don't really have to pay attention to, kind of series. You can keep it in the background while you are cooking or doing something, and you will still have a laugh here and there.

I can almost compare it to Friends since there are some similarities. It's the lives of Joan, Tony, Maya, and Lynn, going through their friendships, jobs, and relationships. Joan is a successful lawyer struggling with being accepted in a male-dominated workplace and her inability to have a long and steady relationship. Tony, a money-oriented kind of woman, looking for her millionaire prince-charming. Maya, a strong woman, a wife, and a mother, working as Joan's assistant, and Lynn, a quirky, educated but jobless woman.

My hubby's favorite character, however, is William, the 5th friend. Being the only man so close to the 4 girlfriends can get a bit odd at times. Good-hearted, goofy, and funny this character is guaranteed to win your heart as well.

I wanted to add these last two series, even if they are a bit older, but just in case you haven't discovered them yet. The reason why is because they kept me on my toes for the whole different seasons, and as I mentioned before, it is not an easy thing to do.

4 . Good Girls
Ph. Credits Netflix

I read about this series on a Desperate Housewives group. Yes, I am a fan, and I was looking for a series with a similar vibe.

Someone suggested Good Girls and, I was immediately hooked.

It's the story of 3 women who, on the verge of their bankruptcy, do the unthinkable: they rob a bank. Little did they know that, instead of solving their problems, this little bravery, will cost them way more.

5 . YOU
Ph. Credits Netflix

This was one of my favorite series of 2020. The reason why I saved it for last is that you might have already watched it. However, I couldn't fail to include it in my list if you haven't watched it yet.

We were hooked since season 1, and every time a new season was coming out, we were binge-watching it for days straight, forgetting to even eat. Ok, jokes aside, this series is captivating and very realistic.

Based on Caroline Kepnes's novel with the homonymous name, YOU is a psychological thriller with Joe Golberg as a protagonist. When he falls in love, his obsession drives him to the unthinkable. I don't want to spoil it for you, but each season gets better. A must watch on my list.
