You may have found that though you would like a relationship in the future, you want to take the time to get to know yourself first. However, if you have never taken the time to do this, how do you go about it? How do you figure out what you really want out of life? Though the answers to these questions may be different for everyone, here are a few suggestions.

1. Write down your goals.

Sit down and think about what you would like to accomplish. These can be small things like finishing a household chore or larger things like writing a book. Make a list of the things that you want to do and start making small steps so you can accomplish these goals.

2. Determine your morals and values.

Think about what you believe in and determine if the people and environment that you surround yourself with support these beliefs and let you be who you are. Sometimes, changing one's surroundings can help a person better live the life that he or she wants.

3. Decide if you want a family life.

Family life isn't something that everyone wants, so think about if you want to go that route in life. If you do, then determine what steps you will need to take to get where you want to be.

4. Determine what your dream job is.

Think about your career path and decide if there is anything that you can do now that will help you get to where you want to be. Maybe, you need a degree to do the job that you dream of doing. If you begin your education now, you will be one step closer to that dream job.

5. Think about who is close to you and means the most to you in your life.

Analyze your inner circle. Sometimes we surround ourselves with people without really acknowledging how much they mean to us. Determine who you can trust if you need support and determine who is just there for the ride.

Thinking about your life and your goals might assist you with achieving your independence and create a better state of mind for you when you go back out into the dating world, so take the time to get to know yourself before sharing your life with someone else.
