Have you ever been in the middle of a conversation with someone, and realized that he or she hasn't looked at you in the eye once since the conversation began? This can be a complex situation to deal with as you may wonder if the person is being truthful with you or if the person is actually listening to what is being said. However, there are several reasons why a person may not maintain eye contact, and not all of these reasons are bad. They are just complex to say the least.

1. A person might be shy.

Maybe, the person that you are talking to is shy. Having a conversation with others might not be something he or she does often, so it might be difficult to look up while he or she is speaking.

2. A person might be anxious.

The person that is speaking might be nervous about what you think about him or her, so he or she might avoid eye contact at all costs. Nerves can get the best of anyone, so be flexible if you think this is the case.

3. A person might be deep in thought.

Sometimes, the conversation is so good that the person that you are talking to might find themselves deep in thought on the subject. This can be a good thing as it might mean that the topic that is being discussed is important to him or her.

Eye contact is something that a lot of people might look for when having a conversation, but if you find that the person that you are talking to doesn't fit your criteria when it comes to this, remember, there might be another reason he or she is avoiding eye contact.
