Barbequing has become an American tradition. Statistics show that 90% of families attend at least one barbeque celebration every year. It's also shown that 40% of families regularly organize barbeque get-togethers. With statistics like that, one must wonder why barbequing is such a popular event and tradition.

First, barbequing or grilling allows you to create a meal that is unmatched by any other type of cooking. The grilled smell and taste will perk up even the pickiest meat eater.

A variety of meats and side dishes are used when barbequing. Fish, pork, beef are traditionally the most popular types of meat for grilling. When visiting your local grocery store, look for meats that are specifically cut and packaged for barbequing. If you do not find pre-packaged meats, then chances are spices, marinates, and other kits for grilling are somewhere nearby.

Most people will expect to see potato salad, beans, and coleslaw at a barbeque gathering. They are not only easy to prepare but they complement just about every type of meat. You can also prepare them early and bring them out when you are ready for them.

Pickles, relish, and onions are the traditional condiments that should be available at every barbeque gathering.

For different flavors in your meat, you can try different styles of grills. The grilled 'smoked' flavor is probably one of the most well-known flavors and favorite of barbequing. With a smoker barbeque, you can have fun getting different flavors in your meat by simply changing the type of wood you use. If you like faster cooking times but still want that grill fried taste you can use a propane gas grill.

With a grilling barbeque you can get a few different types of cooking surfaces as well. The most common versions are a brazier, which is basically a thin wire grill that sits above the charcoals, a flat grill and a rib grilled. Some grills even offer these types of surfaces as non stick, which allow you to cook a whole array of foods that you would not be able to cook on a grill otherwise. By planning correctly you should be able to cook an entire meal, even the side dishes, on the barbeque.

With the many options of addon cooking surfaces you can cook anything from stir fries to rotisserie chickens.

Barbequing might also be popular because it's a great excuse to have a get together or a party.

Outdoor parties not only allow your guests to be present during the cooking of the meal, but also give them the opportunity to be with friends.

Themed parties are always fun for your family and guests. A few festive decorations won't cost much and can be purchased from your local store or party shop. You may also consider purchasing decorations that can be stored and reused at a different time, such as reusable tablecloths and Tiki torches. Have a clambake with tropical music, throw some sand around to give it that real beach feel.

On a final note barbequing might be popular because many people consider it to be a hobby in its own right. Barbequing, like anything else in life, takes time and practice. It can be fun to play and experiment with different techniques and recipes. Once you have developed a liking for barbequing, then you can focus on creating your own variations on traditional recipes and ideas.
