You’ve probably read the title and are starting at it in disbelief. And trust me, I would too. But I’m far from kidding. Getting bored is good…
1. Boredom Can Increase Creativity
Boredom can give one an opportunity to use their time for thought and reflection. By allowing one’s mind to wander and meander, boredom can increase creativity. In a study by Mann, in 2018, people were given boring tasks. The results: their minds were encouraged to wander and in turn, creative ways of thinking were the outcome.
2. Boredom Is Motivational
People dread boredom. Without it, humans wouldn’t have the motivation to do anything. If boredom wasn’t something bad, humans wouldn’t be intelligent and curious like how they are today. Boredom is motivational because people dread it, but also, when we people are feeling bored, they are motivated to stop being bored causing them to use their minds and create.
“Boredom is an emotional signal that we are not doing what we want to be doing” (Elpidorou, 2014)
3. Boredom Improves Mental Health
Nowadays, people are so busy, they barely have time to let their minds wander or get away from distractions. Boredom is a time where one can get away from the overload of information and instead reflect, relax, and get rid of the stress.
Thanks so much for reading! I hope I didn’t bore you. Oh wait! Actually, I do. Boredom’s pretty great if you think about it.
