Nicholas Barron

You know Christmas and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, but do you recall the other no-so-famous December social media holidays of all?

Yes, December’s a busy month. And for many of us, Christmas (Dec. 25) gets all the attention.

But there are many more holidays and special events throughout December to fill your content marketing calendar.

Indeed, below are three unique December social media holidays for stuffing your content marketing stocking.

Dec. 2021 social media holidays

Dec. 1 - World AIDS Day

First observed in 1988, World AIDS Day became the first globally recognized health day.

World AIDS Day raises awareness of HIV and AIDS. More than 36 million people have died worldwide of HIV/AIDS since the start of the epidemic in the early 1980s. And about 37.6 million were living with the disease as of 2020.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it’s easy to forget about other health crises.

You and your organization can spotlight the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic by recognizing World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is Ending the HIV Epidemic: Equitable Access, Everyone’s Voice.

You can share HIV/AIDS facts and resources. Or, if the disease has impacted one of your employees and they’re comfortable sharing their experience, use your organization’s social media to tell their story.

Dec. 12 - Gingerbread House Day

One way to get into the holiday season before Christmas is by celebrating Gingerbread House Day.

You can share gingerbread house recipes, such as this one or this one. You can also talk about this dessert’s history. (The first gingerbread house dates back to 2400 BCE.)

Or, branch out and publish content about ginger, the plant on which all gingerbread relies for its tangy flavor.

Gingerbread House Day is a sweet opportunity to get creative. However you celebrate this December 2021 social media holiday though, try to ensure your content aligns with your brand.

Dec. 23 - Festivus

On Dec. 18, 1997, the sitcom Seinfeld aired an episode in which a character, played by Jerry Stiller, starts a holiday to replace Christmas.

That holiday is Festivus, “for the rest of us,” and people have been celebrating it ever since.

While celebrations vary, the gist of recognizing Festivus is to erect an undecorated aluminum pole, called the Festivus pole. Then, you gather with others for a meal, during which you disclose those who disappointed you throughout the year. Here’s a list of Festivus rules.

Some ways you can participate in this December 2021 social media holiday include getting creative with airing your grievances. In addition, you can present something you or your organization accomplishes as a Festivus miracle.

Another idea includes asking your followers to participate in a digital feat of strength, such as a game or contest. Or, join the revelry by sharing a Festivus song.

Festivus “for the rest of us” is a great social media holiday for having some fun, just before Santa’s big arrival.
