Many people struggle with financial insecurity, and New York City isn't an exception. According to, 13% of New Yorkers live below the poverty line in 2020, and 17% of those are children. The statistics for 2021 are yet to come out, and the pandemic may have affected the numbers.

The Bowery Mission is a charity that was founded in the 1870s when its neighbourhood came to define the term “skid row.” This organization aims to serve homeless and hungry individuals in need of help. They have two locations in NYC, with the first and main one located in the Bowery area; and the second location being in Tribeca. The Bowery Mission has been around through the opening of the Statue of Liberty, the Great Depression, the First and Second World Wars, numerous immigration waives, 9/11, the 2008 Financial Crisis, Donald Trump's presidency and now, the global pandemic. These major life-changing events keep happening, and the charity is still there.

It may not be the oldest charity in the city, but it's one of the oldest ones for sure. The Bowery Mission offers help in many ways:

- Free meals and pantry items

- Clothing and showers

- Shelter and housing support

- Medical help

- Residential programs, and more.

The Bowery Mission has a rich history of being a long-standing organization in their community and the entire city. It's a true New York City marvel and a place of home for many low-income New Yorkers seeking support, and they have been fighting poverty for 150 years now. There are many ways you can help, and I encourage you to get involved if you have the time and resources.
