A fire in a Ballard apartment building sent one elderly man to the hospital Sunday afternoon.
According to Seattle Fire, the fire broke out Sunday around 4:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of NW 57th St. The fire originated from a first-floor unit in the seven-story apartment building.
SFD says an elderly man was taken to the hospital in stable condition, however the fire department says there were two injured in the blaze. Both individuals were able to exit the home on their own.
Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and were able to knock down the flames.
This morning, the fire department says that the cause has been ruled "undetermined." The estimated property loss is $153,000.
While the fire was contained to one unit, two adjacent apartment residents were displaced by the fire. The fire department contacted Red Cross to help temporarily house the displaced individuals. According to KIRO, the apartment building primarily houses senior citizens.
SFD has also recently requested that residents check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes after manufacturer Kidde has recalled 226,000 smoke, carbon monoxide, and combination alarms. The recall covers seven different models that were made between May 2019 and September 2020, primarily sold from The Home Depot, Walmart, and Amazon.
The affected models include 2040-DSR, 2050-DS10, 2060-ASR, 2070-VASR, 2070- VDSCR, and 2070-VDSR. The company has said it will replace alarms affected by the recall.
If you're not sure whether your model is on the list of recalled items, Kidde has made a guide to help consumers identify if their smoke, carbon dioxide, or combination alarms are included. You can visit the Kidde Recall webpage and open the step-by-step guide to also learn how to submit a claim for replacement.
You can also call Kidde’s support center, which is available by phone at 844-796-9972 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST on Saturday.
